First Lesson for Today
The first lesson for today’s lectionary readings is Acts 9:36-43.
Commissioner Petros and Tabitha
36 In Yoppē [Joppa], there was some apprentice named Tabitha, which being interpreted says “Dorkas” [gazelle, deer]. She was full of good works and donations that she was doing. 37 It happened in those days: weakening, she died. Washing, they placed her in an upper room.
38 Ludda’s close to Yoppē… The apprentices, hearing that Petros is in it, commissioned two men to him, encouraging [him]: “Don’t delay to cross through to us.” 39 Arising, Petros came with them. They led him, who is appearing, to the upper room and all the widows stood next to him, wailing and exhibiting whatever robes and clothing that Dorkas, being with them, was making. 40 Petros, tossing all outside and placing the knees [down], prayed and, turning to the body, said, “Tabitha, rise up!” She opened her eyes and, seeing Petros, sat up. 41 Giving to her a hand, he raised her up. Voicing the devoted ones and widows, he presented her living. 42 It became known through the whole of Yoppē and many trusted on the Lord. 43 It happened for adequate days [that he] remained in Yoppē with some Simōn the leather worker.
