Getting Lost in a Book

250 years plus one day ago the colonies declared their independence from England. That Declaration of Independence founded this country, and most especially in its declaration that all humans are equal. We have not lived up to that declaration but the better angels of this country have called us all to live up to it.

Monday: textbooks are not what they used to be. Teachers and students (and publishers) are grateful. Textbooks have become a multi-sensory experience, and I will recommend one Monday.

Tuesday: since the Ten Commandments the biblical tradition has reminded humans that covenant relation to God entails covenant commitments. The same applies to a country’s founding documents.

Wednesday: one chronicle about our time that will last. In fact, it will be more important in ten and twenty years than it is now.

Thursday: we turn again to Warren Throckmorton’s guide through the Christian nationalists theories about American history.
