Luke 19:1-10. The Second Testament is a not-so dynamic translation. Enjoy, and I hope my translation will slow you down as you read.
Yēsous and Zakchaios
19:1 Entering, he was going through Yerichō. 2 Look! A man who was called by the name “Zakchaios,” and he was a leading tax agent and he was rich. 3 He was pursuing to see who Yēsous is and he was not able to from [where he was in] the crowd, because he was little[1] in measurement. 4 Running to the front, he ascended on a sycamore tree so he might see him because he was about to go through that [path]. 5 As he came to that place, looking up, Yēsous said to him, “Zakchaios, hurrying, descend! For today it’s necessary for me to remain in your house.” 6 Hurrying, he descended and welcomed him, rejoicing. 7 Seeing, all were grumbling, saying, “He entered to lodge with a sinful man.” 8 Standing up, Zakchaios said to the Lord, “Look! Half of my possessions, Lord, I am giving to the beggars, and if I defrauded someone, I am giving back four times.” 9 Yēsous said to him that “Today deliverance has happened in this house because he is also Abra’am’s descendant. 10 For the Son of Humanity came to pursue and deliver what is lost.”
[1] Or, “young.”
A modestly new thought as I read this today (and listened to a sermon on the text): I wonder if Z. had any kind of future? Perhaps that's an unfair question, since the same question arises in the case of the widow's two coins, given to the temple: there's no explanation of the after-story. If in fact Z. had defrauded many people, after giving half to "the beggars," and then repaying 4x the amount of fraud, was he left completely (physically/financially) destitute?
I do love the last bit of translation, especially: “Today deliverance has happened in this house because he is also Abra’am’s descendant. 10 For the Son of Humanity came to pursue and deliver what is lost.” Jesus pursues what is lost; and he delivers! Amen! (And such a different take than the SS story version that I was raised on and heard several zillion times well into adulthood.)
Love pursue and deliver!
