Gospel Reading for Christ the King Sunday
The jolt for this Sunday is the king is on the cross.
The following reading is from my forthcoming The Second Testament, and I am now reading a PDF of the entire translation. It’s been a long process, but I’m beginning to see the light of the day of it’s publication.
Luke 23:32-43
32 Two others, bad guys, were led with him to be put away. 33 When they came to the place called “Kranion” [Skull], there they crucified him and the bad guys, one on his right and one on his left. [34 Yēsous was saying, “Father, release them, for they don’t know what they are doing.][1] Splitting his robes, they tossed the die. 35 The people had been standing, observing. The leaders were snorting, saying, “He delivered others, let him deliver himself, if this person is God’s Christos, the Elect One.” 36 They mocked him and the soldiers, approaching, offering to him sour wine 37 and saying, “If you are the king over the Youdaians, deliver yourself!” 38 There was also an inscription above him:
THIS IS THE KING OVER THE YOUDAIANS
39 One of the bad guys hanging was insulting him, saying, “Are you not the Christos? Deliver yourself and us!” 40 Responding, the other one, rebuking him, said, “Do you not have awe for God because you are in the same judgment?” 41 We [are judged] rightly, for we are receiving a deserving [judgment] for what we practiced, but this person practiced nothing out of place.” 42 He was saying, “Yēsous, remember me whenever you come into your Empire.” 43 He said to him, “This is true to say to you: Today you will be with me in Paradise.”
[1] Some mss don’t have this half of the verse.
