In 37 years(+10 in training) as a surgeon, I never had a pastor show interest in my “ministry”, my “calling”. But there was lots of pleas for my participation in their “ministries” in my “spare time.” (I was active in YoungLife.) I’m retired now, and enjoying it. I don’t need achievement or performance, or feeling useful, for my identity or meaning in life. Retirement plans: Say ‘yes’ to things I didn’t have time for before. Reconnect with family and friends. Be a good husband. Grow in love.

Oh, not to appear anti-church activity, I taught jr hi Sunday school and led home Bible study all through med school. Later, continued home studies and taught adult Sunday school. My point was, I wish a pastor would have asked to come visit my office, and having observed, encouraged me in serving Christ in that setting. Instead, I finally figured it out myself.
