In our tour with the Northern students in our NT program we visit biblical sites, some Greek archaeological sites, we explore a little about Turkey’s and Greece’s culture, and we come away with memorable impressions — sights, sounds, tastes, sensations — of these places. I call this “tactile” education.
We recently left Kusadasi in Turkey, today’s port for Ephesus, boarded a cruise ship, visited picturesque and historic Patmos where a tour guide led us to the grotto of the revelation, to a monastery of St John, and to a museum where we saw texts and icons and art work connected to Patmos and John.
We “cruised” all night and woke up at the port of the beautiful island of Crete.
On Crete we went to the site of King Knossus, just south of Heraklion, a site about the Minoan civilization. It was hot, hot, but I had never been and it was treat to see. I kept thinking of Israel, in 1 Samuel 8, wanting a king like other nations.
After Crete we headed for Athens by way of Santorini, yes, that Santorini. Our group split into two groups, one heading to the famous city on Santorini of the beautiful blue domes. We spent our evening at the other village at a table of eight. A wonderful night of fellowship and discussion. These pictures below are from Terri Fullerton, who just graduated with the 2018 cohort.
Some blue domes.
This is what you call blue water.
Nothing like a sunset. Not least one in Santorini!
Again, we “cruised” all night and woke up in a port of Athens. So we headed for the Areopagus, where Justin Hughes gave a rousing talk about Paul’s speech. Then we walked up to the Acropolis, the world-famous Athens Acropolis.
On our way down from the Acropolis Kris slipped on one of the marble steps and most likely cracked a bone in her left wrist. Thanks be to God, one in our tour group (Terri’s husband Doug) is an MD, and he immediately tended to her, and got her a splint and sling. We will go to an urgent care facility when we get home Wednesday.
Oh so sorry Kris got hurt. I pray she will heal quickly. Beautiful pics. Safe journey home.
Poor Kris! Hope it’s not cracked! How is she feeling?
