Acts 2:1-21
2:1 When the Day of Pentēkostē [50 Day Celebration] was filled up, they were all joined together. 2 Unexpectedly, an echo came from heaven, like a strong rushing wind, and it filled out the whole house where they were sitting 3 and split tongues – like fire – appeared to them and sat on each one of them, 4 and they were all filled with Holy Spirit and they began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit was giving them to enunciate.
5 Youdaians were residing in Yierousalēm, people of good regard from all the ethnic groups that under heaven. 6 This voice’s occurring… The mass came together and were stirred up because each one of them was hearing them speaking in their own dialect. 7 They were beside themselves and were stunned, saying, “Look! Are not all these who are speaking Galilaioi? 8 How do we each hear in our own dialect in which we were given life?” 9 Parthoi and Mēdoi and Elamitēs and those residing in the Mesopotamia, both Youdaia and Kappadokia, Pontos and the Asia, 10 both Phrugia and the Pamphylia, Aiguptos and parts of Libyē, which is Cyrēnē, and Roman visitors, 11 both Youdaians and converts, Krētes and Arabes: we hear their speaking in other tongues about God’s magnificences. 12 They were all beside themselves and perplexed, saying one to another, “What does this [event] want to be?” 13 Others, deriding, were saying that “They have been filled with sweet wine.”
Petros preaches on Pentēkostē
14 Petros, having stood with the Eleven, lifted up his voice and enunciated to them,
Youdaians and all Yierousalēm residents, may this be known to you and give ear to my utterances. 15 For these persons are not boozing as you suppose for it’s the day’s third hour [9am], 16 but this is what has been spoken through the prophet Yōēl:
17 It will be in the last days, God says,
I will pour out from my Spirit on all flesh
And your sons and your daughters will prophesy,
And your young men will see visions,
And your elders will be dreaming dreams.
18 And on both my male slaves and my female slaves in those days,
I will pour out my Spirit, and they will prophesy.
19 I will give omens in the heaven above
And authenticating signs on the land below –
Blood and fire and smoky vapor.
20 The sun will twist into darkness,
And the moon into blood.
Before the Lord’s great and appearing Day’s coming.
21 And there will be: Everyone who calls upon the Lord’s name will be delivered.
My translation
This fairly literal translation is an excellent way to let us look at a very familiar passage with fresh eyes. Nice!
