I do my best to post something fresh M-Th and my friend Mike Glenn faithfully sends a reflection for Friday. Saturdays have been for Meanderings — get this — for more than fifteen years, and on Sunday we post a prayer or a Bible reading as prescribed in the lectionary. When we leave for a vacation or on a trip of some sort, it can be a challenge to get something up for each of the days. But we try. Kris and I are headed up to Northern Michigan this week but the daily rhythm, I hope, will be covered.
Don’t fall over backward about this: Why should we read novels? What do we gain from reading novels? A new book, really a long essay of a book, explores this topic. You will enjoy Monday’s post.
You and I, and all Bible readers, are challenged to look at old texts all over again. To use a wonderful expression by Marc Borg, “as if for the first time.” Tuesday we take a seat in Sandra Glahn’s classroom to listen to some wisdom about how the church has read statements about women in the Bible, added to them and wounded women in the process, and we also listen up as she gives us some good reasons to look again.
Translating. I answer a common question: What do you want to happen to those who read The Second Testament? Wednesday’s post will reflect on this question with examples, including a couple “surprise” translations.
The American system of capitalism, a term misdefined as often as socialism, has been challenged by one thinker and sociologist after another. Thursday we take a look at a challenging book.
