From The Second Testament: A New Translation
Yēsous rejected at home
6 He exited there and comes to his ancestral village, and his Apprentices follow him. 2 It was a Sabbath . . . he began to teach in the assembly hall. The many listening were shocked, saying, “What’s the source for these things for him? What is the wisdom that is given to this man and these powers being done through his hands? 3 Isn’t this the artisan, Maria’s [Mary’s] son and Yakōbos’s [James’s] and Yōsēs’s [Joseph’s] and Youda’s [Judah’s] and Simōn’s brother? Are not his sisters here with us?” They were tripped up by him. 4 Yēsous says to them that “A prophet isn’t dishonored except in one’s ancestral village and among one’s relatives and in one’s house.” 5 He was not able there to do any power, except, placing the hands on a few ill ones, he healed. 6 He was stunned because of their anti-trust.
He was leading around the encircling villages teaching.
Yēsous commissions twelve
7 He calls the Twelve. He began to commission them two by two. He was giving to them authority over contaminating spirits. 8 He ordered them that they not lift anything for the path—
except only a walking stick,
not bread,
not a bag,
not bronze in the belt
9 but [wear] bound sandals,
and don’t put on two shirts!
10 He was saying to them, “Wherever you enter into a house, remain there until you exit from there. 11 Whatever place doesn’t receive you nor hear you, journeying from there, shake off the soil that is under your feet—as a witness to them.”
12 Exiting, they announced that they should convert, 13 and they were tossing out many demons, and they were oiling with oil many ill ones and they were healing.
