To begin with, we want to look at Katie Gaddini’s wonderful new book, The Struggle to Stay, about how single evangelical women are led by the evangelical community to negotiate their faith with the ways of the world. An important chapter in this book that deals with many subjects. This chp sets up her chp on Purity Culture.
Tuesday we will dip into Austin Carty’s The Pastor’s Bookshelf that presents reading novels as opportunities for learning to love. Think about what you have learned about loving others by reading novels.
Wednesday I want to present a chapter in a forthcoming book about the Gospel of John, in the Everyday Bible Study. The chapter is about the Samaritan woman and the rubble we have to remove in order to comprehend her. Lots to unlearn here.
What does music do the words on the page? What does art do to words? We will go beyond words with reflections by Elie Wiesel in his classroom. What stories he told in his classroom.
Think of joining us.
Excited to read your take on the Samaritan woman. It’s been a struggle for me for years to sit through of all the sermons that paint her to be a loose woman when she was most likely abandoned by multiple men and dealt with desperation and shame, making the offer of living water that much more beautiful to a woman so often left to die and fend for herself, alone mid-day at the well. Also, ready to learn more about single evangelical womens’ struggle to stay, and how we can be more understanding and supportive.
