By Karen Smith A few thoughts on Barbie and gender (Spoiler alert!) My face was red, blushing with anger and embarrassment. Huge tears formed as I fought back feelings of frustration, and then immediate remorse for my lack of gratitude. It was my birthday party, probably around the age of five or six and someone had given me a Barbie. I already didn’t love pink and this sent me over the edge into an aversion to the color that would last several more decades.
I love the conversations that are opened by the Barbie movie. Like you, I totally disliked Barbie as a little girl but my daughter was a girlie girl with a Barbie pink room complete with the Barbie house. And her Barbie definitely lived in Barbie Land as she always dressed her Barbies with high fashion & her Kens only sported their built in briefs. We have so much gender confusion / exploration / struggles in our society today. I wished the the movie ended with the establishment of a BK Land - a society where men & women live together in harmony & partnership - living beyond the stereotypes. Girls don’t have to like Barbies to be girls created specially by God. Same for boys like trunks & GI Joes. Thanks for sharing this post today. I hope more & more conversations occur & people are set free to live in God’s love together.
This was really good thank you for your sharing your story and about the movie. I have not seen it yet, but my daughter took her two daughters and they loved it .
I didn’t think I would want to see this movie because I wasn’t into Barbie, but I really want to see it now. I love the Christian symbolism you describe. Thanks for sharing this.
