David Brooks touched on this recently in the NYT: "Each party is no longer just a political organism; it is a political-cultural-religious-class entity that organizes the social, moral, and psychological lives of its believers."
I am interested to explore how the author sees Jesus' teaching on the coin with Caesar's head leads to suspicion rather than trust. I should read the book!
I have wondered why church feels so different than it did when I was a kid. If the leaders of the 2025 Project are second generation leaders and the Heritage Foundation is playing the "long game", I think I'm beginning to understand the how. After covid and all those toxic church failures started emerging, after you decided to write A Church Called Tov, after Tim Alberta's experiences that caused his book The Kingdom, The Power and The Glory . . . the pieces are starting to come into focus. What I don't understand is the same thing I don't understand about Christian history around 300 AD. Where is Holy Spirit? I know there are actual authentic believers, and yet it seems like God's power isn't showing up. Maybe it's my limited vision?
From here it looks like, feels like, the classic good versus evil story. We all have front row seats to the biggest event in our experience of history. And we are all faced with our fear and courage. Just how much danger will each of us tolerate? When the most visible people in the Republican Party hide (George Bush where are you?), that's an indicator to Putin and Jinping . . those silly Americans are losing it!
Todd Beamer we need you now! There is no such thing as "Christian" Nationalism. It is a Nationalism, but it's got nothing to do with Jesus.
“It is a discipleship problem.” This, I think, hits the nail on the head. The problem is that corrective discipleship is difficult to initiate and maintain in order to disrupt political idolatry. That said, I think, I’ll get this book to learn more.
