By the time our children are 18, they’ve witnessed thousands of murders across a variety of entertainment platforms including television, movies, and video games. The evening news is a list of murders and crimes accompanied by interviews with victims and witnesses and the obligatory politician promising to get tough on crime. The newspaper articles are no better. There are stories of road rage incidents that explode into gunfire, neighbors arguing about a barking dog that becomes a shootout, people killed, others wounded, houses broken into, and cars stolen in the middle of the day.
Jesus relieved suffering in a tangible, immediate way. We are the hands and feet of Jesus. What if the followers of Jesus collectively moved as His Body to pass practical gun laws like in every other Western nation that has decided they would take tangible steps to protect their children. What if the shepherds of Jesus collectively led in this moment to do just that. Maybe then we would model Jesus and His love to all. Let’s not wait to love as He called us to love.
